Richard Habiniak , VRHS Class of 1971

Albany -- Richard J. Habiniak, 73, of Rensselaer, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at Albany Medical Center. He was a graduate of Van Rensselaer High School, Class of 1971.

Richard dedicated more than 30 years of his career to working as a machinist at industrial tool and die co. where he after was able to retire with the aid of his closest sons & took his profession home with him picking up the hobby of crafting pewter-molded figures.

Richard cherished the time he spent with his friends and family. He enjoyed watching sports, particularly boxing and NASCAR, and looked forward to weekly video golf with his lifelong friend, John Kolb commonly bringing provisions.

Survivors include his children, Richard M. Habiniak, Garrett W. M. Habiniak, Jennifer E. Stampf (John), and John R. Habiniak. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Maxwell C. Stampf and Ethan P. Stampf.

Richard was the brother of Virginia Cleary, James P. Habiniak, the late William M. Habiniak, Michael A. Habiniak, Sandra J. Habiniak-Rohrer, and Barbara A. Habiniak-Wimmer.

Richard leaves behind the memory of a man whose laughter brought comfort, whose curiosity and knowledge made him unforgettable, and whose kindness touched the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who shared a part of his life.

Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. A celebration of Richard's life is currently being discussed with the American Eagles Club, in collaboration with his sister, Virginia Cleary, and his dear friend, George Cotugno. Details will be announced when arrangements are finalized.
