George F Bonacker , VRHS Class of 1924

DELMAR - George F. Bonacker, 77, of Forest Road, a retired educator who served for 25 years as principal of the Delmar Elementary School, died Friday in Albany Medical Center Hospital after a long illness. A resident of Delmar since 1943, he was a member of the New York State Youth Commission before coming to Delmar and was a former director of guidance and assistant principal at Philip Schuyler High School in Albany. He was a 1930 graduate of Colgate University, where he had served as captain of the basketball team and president of the student association. He retired as principal of Delmar Elementary School in 1971.
He was a former president of the Bethlehem Central Teachers Association and served as chairman of the Eastern Zone State Elementary Principals Association. He also served as a former president of the local chapter of the Colgate University Alumni Association, and was a member of the Masonic Bethlehem Lodge 1096, the American Association of Retired Persons, the Second Milers and the Town of Bethlehem Historical Association. He was a former officer and member of the New York State Teachers Association.
The widower of Sarah Van Alstyne, he is survived by his second wife, the former Charlotte Hofelich; two daughters, Elizabeth Stevens of Albany and Jeanne Baum of West Sand Lake; a son, Bruce Bonacker of San Francisco; a step-daughter, Marylane Virgil of Rensselaer; a step-son, Christopher Virgil of St Petersburg, Fla.; two brothers, A. Edward Bonacker of Rensselaer and Benjamin Bonacker of Glens Falls, and four grandchildren. Interment will be in Memory's Garden, Colonie.
