Robert Martin Casey , VRHS Class of 1948

Robert Martin Casey resided at 1319 First Street in Rensselaer and attended Van Rensselaer High School. His parents were Peter P. and Catherine M. Casey. Prior to entering the military service he worked for Montgomery Ward in Menands. He enlisted in the Army on January 10, 1949, trained at Camp Pickett, Virginia and was then ordered to Japan. In August 1950, while at Camp Crawford, Hokkaido, Japan he was ordered to Korea. While a member of Company L, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, his parents received a telegram from the Defense Department stating that he was missing in action since December 12, 1950. It was subsequently learned that Sgt. Casey had been killed in action. Sgt. Casey was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct, National Defense Service, Korean Service, Combat Infantryman Badge and United Nations Service Medals. He is buried in East Greenbush, N.Y.
