Joseph P. Carney, 52, died Saturday, December 8, 2018, at Community Hospice in St. Peter’s Hospital surrounded by his family and friends. Joe was born in Albany, and was a lifelong resident of Rensselaer and the son of Thomas and Gail (LaPorta) Carney. Joe began his career in law enforcement as an Albany County Corrections Officer followed by a Sheriff’s Deputy with Albany County and finally as a sergeant with the Rensselaer Police Department. He was an avid outdoorsmen and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing with his beloved sons. In additions to his parents, Joe is survived by his sons, Gavin and Hayden Carney; his brothers, Patrick (Lisa) and Thomas (Cathy) Carney; his cherished godchild , Juliana; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held in the W. J. Lyons Jr. Funeral Home. Interment: New Rural Cemetery, East Greenbush. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Joe’s name to the Neurosurgery Unit (D5E) at Albany Medical Center Hospital.
