James P McGovern , VRHS Class of 1955

EAST SCHODACK - James P. McGovern died peacefully Monday, Feb 27, 2023, surrounded with love. Son of the late James and Lilybelle (Welsh); brother of the late Carol (David) Peirce and Conrad (Carol) McGovern.
Jim "Pepa" was a beloved character. His classic one-liners will forever be etched into his family's memory. A world-class storyteller and guitar strummer, he was known for lifting spirits and helping out whenever he could.
Jim served his country as an M.P. during the Korean War and helped the orphans while in Incheon. Upon his return, he beat up Barbara Noel's boyfriends and took her hand in marriage in 1960. They have been inseparable for 63 years.
Survivors include his soulmate, Barbara (Noel); sons, James (Carol), Michael (Stacey) and Patrick (Karen) McGovern; and his daughter Colleen McGovern Winglosky. Pepa was a light to his eight grandchildren and always made all of the holidays momentous. The kids will forever remember Terrible Legs, Wet Louie's and what Abe would say. He loved each and every one, Jeffrey (Jennelle) McGovern, Julia (James) St. Pierre, Heather (Thomas) Budde, Bryan McGovern, Alexandra (Tucker) Dodson, Jayme (Pace) Abrams, Gregory Winglosky and Kevin Winglosky. He is also survived by 5.67 great-grandkids, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a few friends (because most of them have died... as he would always say).
The family invited everyone to wear a touch of green to celebrate our wonderful memories and love for Jim. He'd like to end his time here on Earth with some funny banter, a smile and, in his own words, a heartfelt "bye now".
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Boys & Girls Club of Rensselaer, as Jim was one of the first volunteers to empower and shape young men of Rensselaer.
