Dawn (Schermerhorn) Clay , VRHS Class of 1970

Dawn Clay, 70, of Schodack Landing, passed away unexpectedly on May 24, 2023 at Albany Medical Center.
Born in Corinth, NY on August 29, 1952 she was the daughter of the late John R. Schermerhorn, Jr. and Mary Estella Baird. She attended Van Rensselaer High School.
Throughout life Dawn was an adventurer. Her love of adventure led her to travel to and live in numerous places throughout the US, US Virgin Islands and even Mexico. Eventually returning home to the Albany area. Many of her career experiences involved working in the moving/shipping of freight industry including time with FedEx. Most recently she worked for Clearview Plastics and for her son, Ben at Jackson Hewitt at the East Greenbush Walmart location. Wherever life led her she was known for her quick wit, hilarious life stories and love of music. Dawn was extremely proud of achieving 23 years of sobriety with AA. During those years she was very active with the program and was herself a sponsor for others.
In addition to her parents Dawn was predeceased by her beloved brother, John R. Schermerhorn, III, his wife, Holly, her substitute parents Paul (Skip) Felts, his wife Doris, and her dearest friend Maureen Hamlin Palumbo. Survivors include her son, Benjamin Karz, his wife Alicia Sambrano, grandson Troy Karz of Brunswick, sisters Gail DeMarsh of Warrensburg and Diane Quinn (Steve) of Connecticut, brother David Cook of Massachusetts as well as nieces, nephews. aunts, uncles, cousins and her special friends Lou and Eileen Hamlin.
Visitation and service will be held on Saturday, June 3, from 3 to 5 pm at Meyers Funeral Home, 741 Delaware Avenue, Delmar NY. A celebration life will follow at the East Greenbush fire house from 6 to 8pm, located at 68 Phillips Rd, East Greenbush NY 12061.
