EAST GREENBUSH - Rick McCabe, 76, passed away on Friday, November 3, 2023, surrounded by his immediate family, after a short battle with a recurring infection

Rick was a lifelong resident of East Greenbush, graduating from Columbia High School, H.V.C.C., Western Connecticut State College, and then earning his M.A. in education at Russell Sage College.

Rick was an avid athlete and a founding member of the Knickerbocker Rugby Team. He enjoyed many years of playing football, baseball, softball, and rugby. Rick's passion became golf later in life and he loved playing in Florida, Myrtle Beach, and with his buddies in Casey's Golf League. Early in his career, he fulfilled his dream of being a disc jockey, earning a position as "The Blue-Eyed Cowboy" on WGNA.Rick was a dedicated teacher and coach for 34 years at Rensselaer Junior/Senior High School. He was a proud coach of baseball, women's basketball, and girls' softball. Among his many coaching accomplishments, his proudest moments included the 1991 Rensselaer boys' basketball N.Y.S. Class C championship, and the East Greenbush girls travel softball state championships and national playoffs.Following his career as a teacher and coach, Rick took an interest in local governance, becoming an East Greenbush town councilman, deputy supervisor, and ultimately town supervisor where he proudly served for several terms.

Rick is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Linda (Wasson) McCabe; his beautiful daughters, Megan McCabe and Lauren McCabe; and sons-in-law, Jonathan Abbott and Jeremy Schiermeyer. He was adored by his grandchildren, Reid and Mason Schiermeyer, and Quinn and Sloane Abbott. Rick's brother, Edward McCabe, was not just family, but his lifelong best friend. Rick is also survived by his loving canine son, Jefferson; siblings, Dean McCabe and Kim Fusco; many nieces and nephews, and countless friends he called family.
